Periodontal Treatment in Hanwell

The Only Way to Stop.
Gum Disease Is to Treat It

At Hanwell Smiles on Uxbridge Road, gum disease is assessed properly before treatment is recommended — pocket depths measured, bleeding on probing recorded, bone levels reviewed on X-ray. The treatment plan matches what we found, not what it’s easiest to offer.

Gingivitis: reversible with professional cleaning and better home care

Bleeding gums and inflamed tissue respond well to a scale and polish from £85 combined with targeted home care advice — catch it here and it doesn't have to progress

Periodontitis: managed deep cleaning under local anaesthetic from £245

Root planing removes the bacterial deposits from below the gum line that a standard clean cannot reach — creating the conditions for the gum to heal

Maintenance: 3–4 monthly intervals for patients with a history of disease

Gum disease is managed over time, not fixed once. We schedule your maintenance at the interval that matches your disease risk — not a blanket recommendation

Are You an Implant Patient?

Peri-implantitis — the implant equivalent of gum disease — is the most common cause of implant failure. Regular periodontal maintenance protects your implant long-term

What's Included in Your
Periodontal Treatment

Comprehensive gum disease management at Hanwell Smiles – from baseline assessment to long-term maintenance.

Periodontal Baseline Assessment

Pocket depths measured at six points around every tooth. Bleeding on probing, gum recession, tooth mobility, and furcation involvement all recorded. Bone levels reviewed on X-ray. This baseline is what we compare future assessments against.

Personalised Treatment Plan

Treatment matched to the severity of your disease — scale and polish for gingivitis, root planing for periodontitis, or a combined approach for mixed presentation. All costs and appointment numbers confirmed before we start.

Supragingival Scaling

Removal of all plaque and calculus from tooth surfaces above the gum line — the baseline phase of periodontal treatment. For patients with gingivitis only, this combined with improved home care is often sufficient to reverse the disease.

Root Planing (Subgingival Debridement)

Under local anaesthetic, the root surfaces inside the pockets are cleaned of all deposits. Each quadrant is treated systematically. The goal is a clean, smooth root surface that allows the gum to reattach and the pocket to reduce.

Six-to-Eight-Week Re-Assessment

Following root planing, we remeasure all pocket depths and compare them to the baseline. This tells us whether the disease has responded, whether further treatment is needed, and what maintenance interval is appropriate.

Long-Term Maintenance Programme

Maintenance hygiene appointments at intervals tailored to your disease history — typically 3 to 4 months for periodontitis patients, 6 months for treated gingivitis. The maintenance interval is the most important single factor in long-term disease control.

The Clinical Process

Root Planing Under Local Anaesthetic
What Actually Happens

Root planing is carried out under local anaesthetic — typically one quarter of the mouth per appointment over two to four visits. Access is gained to the root surface within each pocket using specialist periodontal curettes and ultrasonic instruments. The root surface is debrided of all calculus and biofilm, then the area is irrigated with an antiseptic solution to reduce the residual bacterial count.

Root planing under local anaesthetic — methodical, thorough, quadrant by quadrant

Re-assessment at 6–8 weeks — pocket depths remeasured, response evaluated, maintenance interval set

WHY IT MATTERS

How Gum Disease Causes
Tooth Loss

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in UK adults. It’s almost entirely painless throughout the early and middle stages.

Permanent Bone Loss

Periodontitis destroys the bone and connective tissue supporting the teeth. Unlike many tissues, this bone doesn't regenerate naturally. Early treatment stops the destruction. Late treatment manages what's left.

Systemic Health Links

Research consistently links periodontal disease to cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The chronic low-level infection of periodontitis creates systemic inflammation .

Implant and Restoration Failure

Patients with a history of periodontitis have significantly elevated risk of peri-implantitis — infection around an implant that leads to bone loss and eventually implant failure. Managing gum disease before and after implant placement is essential.

How Often Should Periodontal Maintenance Be Scheduled?

Three to four months for patients with a history of periodontitis — this reflects the time it takes for bacteria to recolonise the pockets following professional debridement. Six months for patients with treated gingivitis. The interval isn’t arbitrary — it’s based on the biology of bacterial recolonisation and the clinical findings at each assessment.
