Dental Implants in Hanwell

The Permanent Answer to a
Missing Tooth.

At Hanwell Smiles on Uxbridge Road, our implant dentist places titanium implants that fuse permanently with the jawbone — acting as an artificial tooth root onto which a custom crown is fitted, matched exactly to the colour and shape of your natural teeth.

Fixed permanently — doesn't come out

Unlike dentures, implants are fixed in the jaw. They function, look and feel exactly like a natural tooth

Prevents bone loss after extraction

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath begins to shrink. An implant stimulates the bone and stops this from happening.

Serving Hanwell Patients

What's Included in Your
Implant Treatment

From your very first consultation through to your final crown fitting – here’s what the implant process at Hanwell Smiles involves.

Free Initial Consultation

We take detailed X-rays and assess your jawbone density, gum health, and the condition of adjacent teeth. We discuss whether you're a good candidate for an implant, whether a bone graft is needed, and what the full treatment will involve — including costs and timeline.

Treatment Planning

Every implant case at Hanwell Smiles is planned individually. We assess the exact position, angle and depth for implant placement — designed for optimal long-term stability and a natural emergence profile for the crown above.

Implant Placement

The titanium implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic in a single surgical appointment. The area is sutured and left to heal. The implant gradually fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration — typically over 3 to 6 months.

Healing & Osseointegration

During the healing period, the titanium implant fuses permanently with the surrounding jawbone — a biological process that creates the foundation that makes implants so stable. We monitor healing at review appointments during this phase.

Crown Fitting

Once the implant has fully integrated, we fit the abutment and take impressions for your custom crown. The crown is colour-matched to your natural teeth and fitted onto the implant — permanently. This is the part nobody will be able to distinguish from a real tooth.

Aftercare & Maintenance

Implants need the same care as natural teeth — brushing, flossing, and regular hygiene appointments. We advise on interdental cleaning around the implant crown and arrange regular check-ups to monitor the gum and bone around the implant long-term.

The Science Behind Implants

Titanium Implants & Osseointegration
How It Works

A dental implant is a titanium screw, typically 3–5mm in diameter and 8–16mm long, placed into the jawbone where the root of the missing tooth used to be. Titanium is uniquely biocompatible — the bone doesn’t treat it as a foreign object. Over 3 to 6 months, the bone cells grow into the surface of the titanium in a process called osseointegration. The implant becomes a permanent part of your jaw – more stable than the attachment of a natural tooth root.

The crown is custom-made and colour-matched — nobody can tell the difference

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Replacing a Missing Tooth
Matters

A missing tooth isn’t just a gap in your smile. It sets off a chain of changes in your mouth that affect the surrounding teeth, the jawbone, and your bite — often gradually enough that you don’t notice until it becomes expensive to fix.

Bone Loss

After a tooth is lost, the jawbone begins to shrink because it no longer receives stimulation from chewing. Over time, this can affect facial shape, neighbouring teeth, and future implant treatment options.

Neighbouring Teeth Shift

Teeth on either side of a gap gradually tip into the space. The tooth above or below can also over-erupt — growing or dropping down into the gap. This creates problems with your bite and makes it progressively harder to restore the space with a straightforward implant or bridge.

Bite and Chewing Problems

Losing a back tooth changes how you chew — you compensate unconsciously, placing more force on other teeth. Over time this causes uneven wear, jaw discomfort, and sometimes cracking of the overloaded teeth. Replacing the tooth early prevents most of this.

How Long Does the Implant Process Take?

From first consultation to final crown fitting, implant treatment at Hanwell Smiles typically takes 4 to 9 months. Most of that is healing time — the surgical appointments themselves are relatively brief. Here’s the general timeline.

A titanium implant can last a lifetime with proper care — it’s permanently fused to the jawbone and doesn’t decay. The crown on top may need replacing after 15 to 20 years. With regular hygiene appointments and check-ups, implants are genuinely the most permanent tooth replacement solution available.
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Some soreness and mild swelling in the days following is normal and managed easily with standard pain relief. We advise on aftercare to make recovery as smooth as possible.
Most adults with good general health and adequate jawbone density are suitable. We assess suitability at your free consultation using X-rays and clinical examination. Patients who smoke or have uncontrolled diabetes need careful assessment. Some patients require a bone graft first — we discuss this openly if relevant.
An implant replaces the tooth root as well as the visible crown — it’s a permanent, fixed solution. A bridge relies on grinding down adjacent teeth for support. A denture is removable and rests on the gum. Implants are the most functionally and aesthetically similar replacement to a natural tooth.
Immediate implant placement after extraction is possible in some cases. We assess whether this is appropriate based on the health of the extraction site and the surrounding bone. We’ll discuss the options at your consultation honestly.
Yes. Hanwell Smiles is open on Saturday and Sunday. We offer implant consultations at weekends — call 020 7096 3325 or book online to arrange a time that suits you.
